How to learn a big strategy game without burning out
A note-taker's method for Civilization, Anno, RimWorld and other deep games.

1One system at a time
Ignore most of the interface at first. Focus on food, then production, then one more system each session.
2Keep a small notebook
Write down what you learned and what you want to try next time. It makes returning after a week much easier.
3Lower the difficulty
Easy settings exist so you can learn. Move up when the game feels predictable.
4Pause often
Most of the games here can be paused or are turn-based. Use it. Thinking time is part of the fun.
5Set a stopping point
Strategy games are designed to keep you saying one more turn. Decide your stopping point before you start and stick to it.
